WALKED ABOUT (2022)

Anne Lister (1791-1840) is known for her travel diaries as well as her intimate diaries, and is today called the first "modern lesbian". She was a person who challenged society's expectations of what and who a woman should be in her time. Today we know her for her "role" in the HBO series "Gentleman Jack". Anne Lister, aged 41, is the main character in Gentleman Jack. She is a landowner and loves to travel. She is seen as masculine by most who know her, and there are several rumours about her sexuality. Because she is independent and wealthy, she has no need to marry a man and plans to marry a woman. Anne Lister wrote detailed diaries about her daily life. A sixth of the diaries are written in a code, developed by herself, and are about her passionate love affair with other women. During her lifetime, Lister wrote over five million words in these diaries. After her death, when the contents were revealed her uncle was advised to burn all the books. He did not make that choice, but instead hid the books in a wall in Shibden Hall where Lister had lived all her life. In 2011, her diaries were added to UNESCO's World Heritage List. On her last journey in 1839, which incidentally lasted over 2 years, together with her wife Ann Walker (1803-1854) she visited Norway, among other things. Paulina Tamara, in collaboration with Kunstplass gallery, has been following Lister's wagon tracks based on diaries and descriptions from the trip. Lister and her wife visited, among other things, King´s view in Krokkleiva and Bolkesjø Gård (Farm) where they were supposed to climb the Gaustadtoppen, but never got that far. Photography was not relevant at the time Anne Lister was alive, but in the photo series "walked about" you get a glimpse of what it looks like today 180 years later as described in Lister's diaries.
